2026 Hurricane Preparedness: Be Ready

Dear Hydro Belize Stakeholders,

The start of the Atlantic hurricane season serves as an important reminder that preparedness is not only a seasonal responsibility, but an ongoing commitment for all of us who live and work in Belize.

This year, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season due in part to the expected development of El Niño conditions. However, experts continue to stress that even a less active season can still produce dangerous storms capable of causing severe flooding, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to daily life. For countries like Belize, where communities and critical services remain vulnerable to rapidly changing weather systems, readiness remains essential.

At Hydro Belize, preparedness is embedded into how we operate. Throughout the year, our teams actively monitor weather developments, assess hydrological conditions, inspect infrastructure, and maintain emergency response protocols designed to support safe and reliable operations across our facilities.

As custodians of critical renewable energy infrastructure, we understand the importance of planning ahead, acting responsibly, and remaining responsive during periods of severe weather. Our operational teams continue to work closely with national agencies and partners, including NEMO, BEL, and the National Meteorological Service, to support coordinated communication and response efforts when required.

We also recognize that preparedness extends beyond organizations and institutions. It begins at home, within families, workplaces, and communities. Taking proactive steps before a storm threatens can make a meaningful difference in protecting lives, property, and livelihoods.

We encourage everyone to use this time to:

• Review family emergency and evacuation plans

• Secure important supplies and communication tools early

Stay informed through official weather and emergency channels and understand local risks and community preparedness procedures

As weather patterns continue to evolve globally, resilience will increasingly depend on preparation, awareness, and collective responsibility. By remaining informed and supporting one another, we strengthen our ability to navigate challenges together.
